VW Polo cambelt: when to change it and what it costs

The cambelt (timing belt) is one of those jobs that is cheap to do on schedule and catastrophic to skip. Here is what you need to know for a Polo or Polo Vivo.

Belt or chain? It depends on your Polo

This matters: the older Polo Vivo (1.4 and 1.6) engines use a rubber cambelt that must be replaced on schedule. Many newer Polos (the 1.0 TSI and similar) use a timing chain instead, which is designed to last much longer but can still stretch or fail and is a different job. If you are not sure which you have, I can tell you.

When does the cambelt need doing?

As a general guide, cambelts are replaced by mileage or age, whichever comes first, and it is always worth doing the water pump at the same time since the belt has to come off anyway. Your exact interval depends on the model and year, so check the service book or ask me with your details and I will confirm.

Why you cannot skip it

If a cambelt snaps while driving, the pistons and valves collide and the engine is usually destroyed. A belt-and-pump replacement is a fraction of the cost of a new engine. It is the definition of cheap insurance, and it is a job I do as a Polo specialist.

Not sure if yours is due, or if it is a belt or a chain? Book a check and I will confirm.
