Why is my VW Polo misfiring?

A misfire feels like jerking or hesitation, a rough or lumpy idle, lost power, or a flashing engine light. On the Polo and Vivo the cause is usually something small and affordable, not a disaster. Here is what is normally behind it.

The most common cause: coils and spark plugs

By far the most common misfire cause on these engines is a failing ignition coil or a worn spark plug. When a cylinder is not sparking cleanly, the engine runs rough and the light comes on. Coils can fail one at a time, so it often starts intermittently and gets worse.

The fix is straightforward: read the fault code to find the affected cylinder, then replace the coil or plug. It is a quick job and the parts are inexpensive.

Other things that cause a misfire

If the plugs and coils are healthy, other culprits include a vacuum or air leak, a dirty throttle body causing a hunting idle, or a tired PCV valve. A proper fault-code scan narrows it down fast instead of guessing and throwing parts at it.

What to do about it

Do not ignore a flashing engine light: a persistent misfire can damage the catalytic converter, which is expensive. The smart first step is a diagnostic scan to pinpoint the exact cylinder and cause, then fix only what is actually wrong. If you already know it is a coil, you can book that directly.
